My friend who is studying to be a physical therapist started playing this book, and I zoomed in with a falcon vision and fox ears. It describes how the brain works, and leads into the effects of different types of exercise on the brain and body. It takes the guilt and excuses out of why you feel terrible or self-sabotaging, or for some, being stuck in a bottomless pit of doom. Finally, I can understand why in the past couple of years I have become a genius, why I can learn things so quickly. It explains why I suffered in school so much as a child. It explains why my mother has been ill for decades and only got better living on her own when she was in Hawaii. The book explains why I inherited the addiction of stress and procrastination from my father (and how yoga broke those habits). I have never made so many positive, huge life changes in one week from listening to a book, EVER!
Whether you are a therapist, yoga instructor, doctor,or physical trainer: you must read this! It will help you and your patients/students.
If you believe that life is hopeless or that you are too overwhelmed, have no fear. So much you can’t control, but you can take ownership of your body and mind, and this information will set you free to start doing just that. The book is very technical but he has enough relatable examples and studies that even if you don’t understand the acronyms, you will get useful “ah, ha, moments.”
The next time you feel unhealthy levels of stress: jump rope, do yoga, go on a run, write a list, color, just DO SOMETHING PHYSICAL. Get out of your head. YOU ARE MENT TO MOVE!
Thank you so much John J. Ratey, this book even further solidifies that I am on the right path of becoming a dance therapist.
